It is difficult to be a private pilot in WRC. You can be called Petter Solberg and have been world champion in 2003, but against the factory teams, you can (almost) do nothing. Ken Rees is aware of the big gap compared to other teams due to a limited budget. Nevertheless, the PSWRT team manager still believes in the chances of the Norwegian driver who according to him will not give up.
“We have to keep trying because he will be good at future rallies” says Rees on the official WRC website. The latter goes even further: " Concerning Rally from Australia (from September 9 to 11, editor's note) we are optimistic, we think he can climb to the highest step of the podium.
For Ken Rees, success will come through work. The goal is to always try to improve the team's performance: “We continue to work with Citroën and we focus on reliability. We have the performance and we don't want to give it up. Not when you have a driver like Petter. He is one of the four or five best drivers in the world, we will not let him go.”
When it comes to discussing Solberg?s possible career in the championship if he had had the official support of a team, Ken Rees is categorical: “We could have won? but we are still customers and we still have a small budget”.
Although he races less often in testing than the factory drivers, the Norwegian has often been faster in special stages.
Petter Solberg is in fifth place in the drivers' standings with 73 points at mid-championship. He is only ahead of the four factory drivers. Not so bad for a private driver whose team was only born in 2009.
