Le WRC will soon no longer be supplied by Michelin. The Clermont-based manufacturer will give way to Pirelli, which has signed an exclusivity contract for the first two categories (called RC1 and RC2) for a period of 4 years from 2021.
It will be a return to basics for Pirelli, which was present as a rubber supplier during the first season of the world championship in 1973. Absent in 2017, the Italian firm attempted a comeback the following season and became the supplier of the JWRC.
“This is an exciting new chapter in the development of the WRC and we are pleased to announce Pirelli as sole manufacturer for a period of 4 years. I am sure that Pirelli will bring all its experience to the program”, commented the director of Rally to the FIA Yves Matton.
The FIA World Council validated the contract by electronic vote this week. Pirelli will thus be present in two of the four FIA world championships with the F1.
