Without Loeb, Hyundai returns to Germany to win

Le Rally of Germany 2019 (August 22-25) is the second round of the Tarmac World Rally Championship. Already victorious at the Tour de Corse ce printemps, l’équipe Hyundai souhaite maintenir son leadership sur cette surface, although the record holder of the event, Sébastien Loeb, is absent.

Andrea Adamo, the boss of the structure based near Alzenau (two hours' drive from the base of the event), is sticking to his offensive positions. “We know how to score big points in Germany, we have already won there and finished on the podium several times. It's up to us to make an extra effort to stay within the title objective. »

The Italian seems overmotivated. “Dani Sordo returns with us for the first time since his victory in Sardinia (Italy) and he has always been on pace in Germany (success in 2013. Editor’s note). Andreas Mikkelsen will be there thanks to two well-run gravel rallies, we hope he will take to the tarmac with the same energy. »

Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul had offered the South Korean brand its first WRC success among the German vines in the summer of 2014. The Belgian duo approaches this meeting with desire and seriousness, as the co-pilot explains.

“You have to be very vigilant because you arrive at full speed in junctions and sometimes you have to brake before you can see the road, specifies Nicolas Gilsoul. If you can make a small difference when braking, you are in a good position to create a good gap at the end of the special. This rally is challenging because there are a lot of tight turns. It is crucial to have an adequate description of each turn. »

His partner adds another typical German aspect. « In three steps you have so many different characteristics. We have the vineyards, then the Saarland special stages and finally the famous courses in the Baumholder military terrain”, explains Thierry Neuville, who will want to make up for his 25-point gap on the leader Ott Tänak (Toyota).

" Moreover, the weather plays a major role in the final result of the test. The latest editions have always been very surprising from this point of view. This makes the choice of tires very tricky. »
