Shane van Gisbergen has already had some experience in rally, including a partial program in Australia at the wheel of a Skoda Fabia R5. In New Zealand, he will still be on board the Skoda, prepared by the RaceTorque team, with Glen Wetson as co-driver. The duo placed second in the first round of the Australian Rally Championship this season at the National Capital Rally in Canberra.
The New Zealander, current leader of the Supercars championship and recent 5th in the GTE-Pro category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will add another string to his bow with this first participation in the world rally championship. “I've been around for a long time and I used to go to all the rallies when I was young to see the New Zealand Rally, confided Shane van Gisbergen. It was always a dream to do it, but I never really had the opportunity. My favorite memories from my youth? Before the Manukau super-stage, the route went through Totara Park, a stone's throw from where I grew up. It was at night in the early 1990s. I remember riding on my father's shoulders to watch the cars go by. »
