Toyota continues testing with the Yaris WRC

Toyota Gazoo Racing prepares for its return in WRC next year by carrying out tests with his Yaris WRC. The Japanese manufacturer, which trusted Tommi Mäkinen to carry out this project, has developed a second mount for testing and now has more than 5000km covered.

“We worked hard to be on time, admitted Tommi Mäkinen, Team Principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC. We have carried out numerous test sessions since May and we are up to date with our program. The addition of a second car helped us diversify development. We want to test the car in all conditions and on all surfaces to be ready for 2017.”

“We wanted to split the development into two parts, explains Tom Fowler, the chief engineer. The first team works only in Finland and focuses on the reliability and endurance of the car, with a testing program focused on the engine and gearbox. The second team focuses on suspension and works elsewhere in Europe, in Spain and Portugal for example. We have not yet started testing on asphalt, but we can already say that the performance levels of the car are very high. We have been able to move forward without encountering any major problems so far and that is very encouraging. »

Toyota Gazoo Racing called on Juho Hänninen and Jarkko Nikara to support Tommi Mäkinen during testing.

“I was impressed the first time I drove the Yaris WRC, admits Juho Hänninen who remains the main test pilot of the program. The handling and balance of the car were perfect and the design work was exceptional. We didn't waste any time putting in the miles because the car has been very reliable from the start. The performance of the Yaris WRC has been very consistent since the first tests outside Finland in all types of conditions. »

Tommi Mäkinen is resolutely optimistic about Toyota's chances of success in its return to the top of the rally.

“I feel a very family atmosphere in our factory in Puuppola, adds the director of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRC. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the atmosphere remains essentially the same despite the expansion of our structures and the arrival of new employees. There are no language barriers here. The team is very united and everyone does their best without compromise. This is one of the essential ingredients for a successful team and I am delighted to see that everyone has adopted the same approach and is moving in the same direction. »
