WRC – Joginder Singh, Safari Rally star, is no more

Joginder Singh died last Sunday in Britain. This 81-year-old Kenyan has entered the legend of rally by winning the Safari Rally three times, a terribly demanding event for both the mechanics and the crew. “Flying Sikh” or the flying Sikh excelled in this event by reaching the finish line 19 times in 22 starts, which constitutes a real feat given the conditions encountered during the specials.

Joginder Singh, who was the first President of the Royal East African Automobile Association, had his first success in 1965 at the wheel of a Volvo PV544 when the event was still contested outside the framework of the WRC. His other two victories came in 1974 and 1976 with Mitsubishi. The first was made with a Lancer Colt while the last was signed aboard a Lancer 1600 GSR.
