Chris Meeke point at the head of the Rally d’Australie à l’issue du premier passage de la première étape. Le pilote Citroën devance d’une poignée de secondes les Hyundai de Dani Sordo and Hayden Paddon. The Spaniard was even the first leader of the event before being slowed down by gear selection problems and a spin.

The Volkswagens are grouped together at the gates of the top 3 after being handicapped by their opening positions in the specials. It is Andreas Mikkelsen who is best placed with only a few tenths ahead of his teammates Jari-Matti Latvala and Sébastien Ogier who has a strong chance of winning a 3rd title this weekend.

M-Sport a réalisé un départ médiocre. Ott Tänak is only 7th after stalling, while his teammate Elfyn Evans is only 10th after suffering a puncture. Thierry Neuville remains behind by evolving almost a minute ahead of Stéphane Lefebvre which replaces Mads ostberg.
