WRC – A new team for Mikkelsen and VW

It will be the Volkswagen Motorsport II. The FIA ​​announced on Wednesday March 6 the entry by VW, which is making a thunderous debut in the World Rally Championship this year (WRC), of a new team. Andreas Mikkelsen will therefore begin his season at rally of Portugal with a team entirely dedicated to its Polo R. Furthermore, the Norwegian will, in fact, be eligible to score points for the Drivers and Manufacturers classifications.

This choice, explains Sven Smeets, team director at Volkswagen, was motivated for logistical and sporting reasons. “The third car was always planned”he recalls. “But we decided to put Andreas in a dedicated team to give him more testing days and thus avoid sharing them with the other drivers. Of course, we are a manufacturer. So having a dedicated structure is more interesting for us to have our own space at the service park. »

The Portugal Rally will take place on the weekend of April 14.
