Yohan Rossel: “In Ypres, I’m aiming for the podium in WRC2”

Fourth in the WRC2 championship after 4 appearances, Yohan Rossel will have to score big points in Belgium in order to make up part of the 16 points behind leader Andreas Mikkelsen. Winner last year on this field, the Frenchman is among the favorites.

Yohan Rossel: “In Ypres, I’m aiming for the podium in WRC2”

How did you spend this long period from Sardinia at the beginning of June?

I didn't really have time to get bored. In particular, I had the opportunity to comment on the rally from Estonia for Canal+. If I still want to be behind the wheel, it was an interesting exercise to follow the WRC2 championship. This break allowed me to do an internship at Le Mans with the French FFSA Team, I continued my coaching sessions... Even without racing, it was still a very “motor sport” period.

Isn't it weird to watch an event where you see your opponents battling it out... without being involved?

It's true that it's a bit strange, but I have no choice and I don't wish them harm. I notice that it's always the same people who are at the forefront. I am not surprised. Whether it's Andreas Mikkelsen or Teemu Suninen, they are constantly in front and they are the ones we fought with every time.

How do you see the rest of this WRC2 championship?

It is very clear to me that two victories will not be enough to win the title. We know what we have to do. The goal is to score very big points. It's rewarding to have to fight against drivers of this caliber who have won or obtained podiums in WRC. We must compete on all grounds, in terms of added value, there is nothing better.

How will you prepare for the Ypres rally?

I am lucky to be surrounded by people who are satisfied with our services and who believe a lot in us. Whether it is the Stelantis group, Yacco or the FFSA, they do everything they can to allow us to evolve in the best conditions. Before our return to the WRC, we will have the opportunity to compete in the Rally van Staden which is located 80 km from Ypres the weekend before WRC2. There will also be a practice session and shakedown just before the rally.

What does Ypres inspire you?

I have always been well received in Belgium. I like the roads there, even if it's a long way from the Cévennes! We were successful there last year, but each edition is different and if the rain gets involved, it can become very complicated, especially without openers. We are not behind in the championship, nothing is decided, I am not putting pressure on myself, but it is certain that we will have to achieve a result. I don't want to make any mistakes and I'm aiming for the podium.

Since Monte-Carlo, is this an impression where you are particularly serene?

Serene? I don't know. What is certain is that I am starting to have experience and I know a little more what to expect. I feel like I've taken a step forward in my preparation for the championship and in my understanding of the car. The PH-Sport team trusts me and I find that our start to the season has been successful with two victories.
