Yves Matton wants more support from manufacturers

If the 2017 regulatory change in WRC had seen Hyundai, Toyota, M-Sport Ford et Citroën répondre favorablement à la nouvelle donne en WRC, le départ de la marque française fin 2019 laisse le plateau de pointe du Championnat du Monde avec seules trois marques et une dizaine de WRC en moyenne sur chaque manche.

On the manufacturers' side, we must also not forget the new WRC2 category, which will allow M-Sport Ford and Citroën to officially support drivers like Adrien fourmaux or Mads Ostberg.

But this support from the brands must be increased over the years according to the FIA to reach around twenty “official” WRC and WRC2 cars combined. “We want this to be the average number, explains Yves Matton, FIA rally director, on the WRC website.

Never before have we seen these numbers consistently in the WRC and this is our aim over the next five years. I think we would dream of talking about 20 World Rally Cars at the start, but step by step we are putting in place the tools to have 20 cars at the start.

I know five years is a long process, but it's the only way to get there. The changes we are making in WRC 2 and WRC 3 are really important for this. »
