At the end of the first part of qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso), Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren), Sergio Pérez (Force India), Marcus Ericsson (Sauber) and Kevin Magnussen (Haas) were unable to cross the threshold of Q1.
Carlos Sainz was forced to stop at the side of the track due to a mechanical problem, the Spaniard indicating that he no longer had any power on his car powered by the block Renault.
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) had set the best time on soft tires in 1'30″814, 90 thousandths ahead Max Verstappen (Red Bull), author of his lap on super-soft tires, and 174 thousandths ahead of Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari).
