Benchmark value in terms of engine and hybrid technology in F1 since the advent of Power Units in 2014, Mercedes will offer its competition developments a transfer to road vehicles.

The German engine manufacturer and manufacturer should install in the next creations of the AMG department a « electric turbo driven by exhaust gases », reminiscent of the MGU-H technology of F6's V1 turbo/hybrids.

Developed in partnership with Garrett Motion, this small electric motor fits on the shaft between the exhaust-side turbine wheel and the fresh-air-side compressor wheel and drives the compressor wheel before accepting the exhaust gas flow.

This choice resolves “the choice between a smaller turbocharger that responds more quickly but achieves relatively low peak performance, and a larger turbocharger with higher peak performance that suffers from lag time. » according to Mercedes.
