The chalice to the dregs for McLaren in Sao Paulo. The British team was the big loser of the Brazilian Grand Prix with a 0 point in the race, combined with two retirements: Lando Norris on a mechanical problem mid-race and Daniel Ricciardo on an accident with Magnussen in the first round. The Australian misjudged his distances with the Haas at turn 8 and hit the Dane's right rear wheel. The VF22, moving backwards, then came to harpoon the MCL36 in a second step.

The stewards' investigation, carried out after the race, concluded that Ricciardo was guilty of this double collision with Magnussen. “Ricciardo made contact with Magnussen at Turn 8 on the first lap, causing Magnussen to spin, and the two cars then touched, explains the FIA. McLaren explained that they believed Magnussen was slower exiting Turn 8 than the other cars in front, making it difficult to gauge whether the door was closing as the two cars interacted. Ricciardo explained that he believed he slowed down enough to avoid colliding with Magnussen and that he misjudged the situation slightly. »

The FIA therefore sanctioned the Australian with three penalty places on the starting grid for the last race of the season, in Abu Dhabi, and two penalty points on his points license. Daniel Ricciardo, who will experience his last Grand Prix with McLaren (and possibly in Formula 1), will therefore begin his last stand with a detrimental handicap in the fight against Alpine.
