Competing in the Gatorade Duel 1 to secure her starting grid position in her first Sprint Cup race, at Daytona, Danica Patrick suffered a major crash on the final lap of the 60-lap event. While she was in 15th position, the young woman was hit by Aric Almirola, himself pushed by Jamie McMurray coming out of turn 2, and ended her race against the wall. Fortunately, more fear than harm for Danica, whose Chevrolet Impala nevertheless suffered significant damage. The race was also fatal to Juan Pablo Montoya, the unfortunate victim of a spin from David Gilliland which also caused Paul Menard to fall. Michael Waltrip was no better off, making a mistake while returning to the track in preparation for the finish. Duel 2, on the other hand, was calmer, not having been neutralized.
