ABB presents a new charging system for Gen3

Ahead of the 2023 season of the Formula E, the company ABB presented a new battery charging system for electric single-seaters. Already a sponsor of the discipline for several years, ABB will be the official supplier of charging for the new Gen3 cars.

Each charger can deliver a maximum power of 160kW and is capable of simultaneously charging two vehicles with 80kW power, before the race. This allows racing teams to benefit from “double charging” capability from a single unit, significantly reducing the charger footprint and transport-related emissions, as there is no longer any need to have one unit per car.

Frank Mühlon, CEO of ABB E-mobility, said: “We are delighted to bring our innovative charging solutions to the world's biggest e-mobility stage – the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship – continuing our desire to use the series as a test bed for new, more sustainable technologies. Charging Gen3 cars will allow us to gain valuable insights into charging in a fast-paced, competitive environment. The experience and knowledge we gain will be used to continually improve ABB chargers for customers and consumers. »

Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle added: “Technical progress and sustainable innovation are the cornerstones of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Our partnership with ABB is based on a shared commitment to advancing electric mobility and we are delighted that ABB will provide advanced charging systems for our racing teams in Gen3. ABB's mobile chargers set the industry standard and will serve as essential infrastructure for the championship. We look forward to showcasing ABB's cutting-edge charging products under the competition's demanding standards and demonstrating that high performance and durability can coexist without compromise. »
