In a qualifying session where supersoft tire degradation is key, Artem Markelov lives up to his reputation as the king of Pirelli conservation and takes a crucial pole position for second place in the drivers' championship and the team title for Russian Time with 4 additional points. In 1'47''181, he is ahead by more than two tenths Nyck de Vries (Racing Engineering) which equals its best performance in qualifying.
Antonio Fuoco (Prema Racing) produced a good performance in 3e position ahead of Oliver Rowland (DAMS) and Norman Born (Arden). With a 6e place, Charles Leclerc (Prema Racing) will not beat its own record for number of poles achieved in a year, nor the record for poles for a driver in GP2/F2 which he co-holds with Pierre Gasly and Stoffel Vandoorne.
Luca Ghiotto (Russian Time) is the lowest ranked contender for 2nd place in the championship in 7e position on the grid. He is ahead of Nobuharu Matsushita (ART GP), Sergio Sette Câmara (MP Motorsport) and Alex Albon (ART GP) for the top 10.
