While the first yellow flag was displayed following a spin by Bryan Clauson (Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing), Jean Alesi (Fan Force United) had already retired after taking the advantage over Simona de Silvestro. Both Lotus-powered drivers were called to the pits for driving beyond 105%. The peloton made its first stop as James Hinchcliffe (Andretti Autosport) and Ryan Briscoe (Team Penske) battled for first place. Dario Franchitti (Target Chip Ganassi Racing) was harpooned in the pits by EJ Viso (KV racing Technology), the reigning champion having to change his front wing in the process.
