Josef Newgarden (Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing) set the best time in the first free practice session for the Indy 500, completing the lap at an average speed of 220,250mph. JR Hildebrand (Panther Racing) is second ahead of Bryan Clauson (Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing), James Jakes (Dale Coyne Racing) and Tony Kanaan (KV racing Technology). simon pagenaud (Sam Schmidt Hamilton) sets the eighth fastest time while leader Will Power (Team Penske) settles for 14th fastest time. Reigning champion Dario Franchitti (Ganassi Racing) is 18th while Rubens Barrichello (KV Racing Technology) sets the 20th time.
Jean Alesi is 25th at the end of a disappointing session for the Frenchman. “32 laps today. We are not where we wanted to be. The battle will not be easy but we knew it,” comments the Fan Force United pilot.
Sébastien Bourdais did not take part in the test session, his Dragon Racing team encountering difficulties with the engine manufacturer Lotus which has already separated from Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Bryan Herta Autosport.
