Dario Franchitti (Ganassi Racing), the last Indy 500 winner, set the best time in the fifth free practice session with a time of 40. Townsend Bell (Panther Racing) and Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) are the closest, failing by almost a tenth. Reigning champion Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport) and Ryan Briscoe (Ganassi Racing) complete the top five two tenths behind. On the French side, simon pagenaud (Schmidt Motorsports) achieved the 13th time while his teammate Tristan Vautier ranked 21st just behind Sébastien Bourdais (Dragon Racing).
