At the end of the first qualifying runs for the Indianapolis 500, it was Ed Carpenter (Ed Carpenter – Chevrolet) who set the best average over four laps at 230,114 mph. He is ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport – Honda), rookie Jack Hawksworth (Bryan Herta Autosport – Honda), James Hinchcliffe (Andretti Autosport – Honda), who is well back after his concussion suffered during the Indianapolis Grand Prix, Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport – Honda), Will Power (Team Penske – Chevrolet), Juan-Pablo Montoya (Team Penske – Chevrolet), Carlos Munoz (Andretti Autosport – Honda) and Josef Newgarden (Sarah Fisher Hartman – Honda). These nine drivers are currently admitted to the Fast Nine, to compete for pole position, but other tests are underway for the other competitors to try to improve their average.
