Tony Kanaan set the best time in the first practice session at Texas Motor Speedway. By completing the lap of the oval in 23”8762, the Brazilian was a tenth ahead of his teammates Scott Dixon and Ryan Briscoe who placed three DW12s from Chip Ganassi Racing at the front. Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport) and Helio Castroneves (Team Penske) complete the top five two tenths behind Juan-Pablo Montoya (Team Penske). Championship leader Will Power (Team Penske) set the tenth time. The French are further behind with simon pagenaud (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) 16th and Sébastien Bourdais (KVSH Racing) 18th, more than six tenths behind the reference time.
