Ryan Briscoe (Team Penske) sets the best time in the first free practice session at Fontana by completing a lap in 33. The Australian is eight hundredths ahead of Ed Carpenter (Ed Carpenter Racing). Dario Franchitti (Chip Ganassi Racing) ranks third ahead of Will Power (Team Penske) and Helio Castroneves (Team Penske). Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport) took 16th place, being the last driver within the same second as the best time. simon pagenaud (Schmidt-Hamilton Motorsports) is 18th.
