Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport) won the Iowa round which seemed destined for Ganassi driver Tony Kanaan. The Brazilian led for most of the race, but was unable to hold off the Indianapolis 500 winner's comeback after the final pit stop. Michael Andretti's team thus won its fifth consecutive success on this oval. Josef Newgarden (Sarah Fisher Hartman) finished 2nd ahead of Kanaan. simon pagenaud (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports) took 11th place while Sébastien Bourdais (KV Racing) was forced to retire due to an electrical problem.
