The rookie Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne Racing) set the best time in the first free practice session at Road America.
At Elkhart Lake, the Frenchman confirmed that he felt very comfortable on roads, after his 2nd place and his pole at the Indy GP in May.
Grosjean beat Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti) and Josef Newgarden (Team Penske) by more than 1/10th.
On the Wisconsin road, the Frenchman found his ex-Haas teammate F1 Team, Kevin Magnussen, which made its debut in IndyCar, in n°7 of McLaren SP.
Engaged in IMSA with Chip Ganassi Racing, the Dane replaces Felix Rosenqvist, victim of a violent accident last Saturday in Detroit. Cautious, Magnussen made his mark with a 23rd time.
In the tricolor camp, Sébastien Bourdais (AJ Foyt) also started his weekend rather well, with a 7th fastest time. while simon pagenaud (Penske) settled for a 17th time.
A second practice session will take place on Saturday, before qualifying, from 20:30 p.m. (HF).
