Josef Newgarden (Penske) set the best time in the first free practice sessions of the weekend, on the Mid-Ohio road course.

With a fast lap in 1'07"2524, he beat Pato O'Ward (McLaren SP), another driver powered by Chevrolet, and Jack Harvey (Meyer Shank Racing), first of the Honda camp representatives.

The championship leader, Alex Palou (Chip Ganass), was content with 9th fastest time.

Back in business, after his violent accident in Detroit, Felix Rosenqvist (McLaren SP) caused the only red flag of the session, while Colton Herta (Andretti) stood out with a spectacular rescue made on the grass.

Should @ColtonHerta go buy a lottery ticket?

Because he just got LUCKY. No contact for #26.#INDYCAR // #Honda200 // @FollowAndretti pic.twitter.com/nhofNBEHUY

After benefiting from testing last week, Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne) posted a promising 6th time.

Still on the French side, Sébastien Bourdais (AJ Foyt) placed himself in 8th position on the timesheet.

simon pagenaud (Penske), often at ease at Mid-Ohio, where he triumphed in 2016 and reached the podium three other times, started his weekend with a 12th time.
