After the first event of the Houston doubleheader, four of the 10 drivers who still had a mathematical chance of being titled came out of the fight, namely Charlie Kimball, Will Power, James Hinchcliffe and Dario Franchitti. As a reminder, two races remain to be contested (tomorrow's and the Fontana final on October 19). Victory earns 50 points, 1 point is awarded to the author of pole position, 1 other to the drivers who have led at least one lap and 2 others to the driver who has led the most laps. However, seventh in the general classification, Dario Franchitti is now 110 units behind Helio Castroneves.

There are now six candidates for the crown. They respond to the names of Helio Castroneves (513 points), Scott Dixon (505), simon pagenaud (463), Marco Andretti (447), Ryan Hunter-Reay (437) and Justin Wilson (428).
