Alexander Red (Andretti Autosport) finished first in the first free practice session, with a best lap of 1'09"8784.

The 500 Indy2016 winner beat Jack Harvey (Meyer Shank) and Rinus VeeKay (Ed Carpenter Racing).

For his return after skipping the Texas oval, Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne Racing) posted a promising fifth time.

Triple winner on the Indianapolis road course (2014, 2016, 2019), simon pagenaud (Team Penske) started their day slowly with an 11th time.

Finally, still on the French side, Sébastien Bourdais (AJ Foyt Racing) only completed three laps before experiencing a mechanical problem, which caused the only red flag of the session, as its No. 14 had to be towed.

Note the absence of Max Chillton (Carlin) who will not participate in the Indy GP after having experienced a “problem linked to his travel”, according to the team press release. The Englishman will not be replaced.

EL2 will begin at 19 p.m. (HF), while qualifying will take place from 22:30 p.m.
