2012 should sound like the year of renewal for the?IndyCar. The first season of the new chassis, 2012 will also see the return of Chevrolet as an engine manufacturer. A sole supplier for some time, Honda will benefit in 2011 from a final season without competition. The engine will be a direct injection Bi-turbo V6 running on E85, developed in collaboration with Ilmor. Chevrolet was present in Indycar from 1986 to 1993 then from 2002 to 2005, winning a whopping 104 victories, and triumphing at the Indianapolis 500 six times.

“We've been hearing fans calling for competition for a long time
, says Randy Bernard, the big boss of the American series. We are therefore very excited at the idea of having a competition between engine manufacturers again from 2012. The future of IndyCar therefore looks bright with Chevrolet lining up alongside our long-time supplier Honda ».

Interesting detail to note, Roger Penske had a big role to play in this comeback since it was he who went to see Chevrolet. The single-seaters of “The Captain” will therefore be powered by a Chevy V6 in 2012.
New cars, new engine, and the authorization given to each team to develop its own aerodynamic package (as Lotus will do for example), the leaders of IndyCar are particularly happy with the turn taken by their championship. They now hope that this much good news will attract even more engine manufacturers.
