After hosting the championship from 2002 to 2005, and before that the CART from 1997 to 2002, the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, near Los Angeles, will once again host the discipline car major in the United States next season, we learned yesterday, Tuesday. This 2-mile (3,218 kilometer) “D”-shaped oval, with its 14-degree bank, was the scene of two records in the history of American single-seater racing. It is in fact on this track that Gil de Ferran, in 2000, completed the fastest lap, at an average of 388,454 km/h. Then in 2003, Sam Hornish won the event at an average speed of 333,305 km/h. With Long Beach and Sonoma likely back on the 2012 calendar, this will bring the number of events contested in California to three.
