The crash which occurred in Las Vegas was fatal to Dan Wheldon. The winner of the Indianapolis 500 hit the safety barrier at full speed, flying away during the pileup that occurred at the start of the race. Rushed by helicopter to the nearest hospital, Dan Wheldon did not survive his injuries. The drivers, who obviously decided to end the race, completed five laps of honor to pay tribute to the Briton.
