The returning rider, Tony Kanaan (Chip Ganassi Racing), finished first in the only free practice session on the weekend's program, thanks to a best lap of 354,334 km/h.

In charge of the ovals on the No. 48 occupied the rest of the time by Jimmie Johnson, the 46-year-old Brazilian achieved his best time at the start of the session, at Texas Motor Speedway. He beat Takuma Sato (RLL) and Pato O’Ward (McLaren SP).

Despite this remarkable comeback, TK already knows that he will start at the back of the pack, because the qualifying session was canceled due to the delay in the weekend program following the rain. It was decided to determine the starting order by the championship ranking.

Its leader, Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing), will start at the front alongside Will Power (Penske) and Scott Dixon (CGR). simon pagenaud (Penske) and Sébastien Bourdais (AJ Foyt) will start from 5th and 6th row respectively. Le Poitevin set the 5th time in free practice, while Le Manceau did not show his advantage (22nd).

Sunday (23 p.m.), for race 2, it is also the championship ranking which will dictate the starting order.

The start of race 1 was brought forward by half an hour last night, to 1:10 a.m.
