Poleman of the 500 Miles of Indianapolis, Helio Castroneves won during the legendary raceIndycar after 3h20 of circuit. The Brazilian took the lead two thirds of the way into the race and never let go. This is the third victory for Castroneves in the Indy 500, after his successes in 2001 and 2002. It is the sixth victory for a Brazilian in the history of the 500 Miles. Castroneves won ahead of Dan Wheldon (winner in 2005), Danica Patrick, Townsend Bell, Will Power, Scott Dixon (2008) and Dario Franchitti (2007). Frenchman Nelson Philippe retired on the 130th lap. Twenty cars (out of 33 at the start) finished the race.
