The first part of the session was dominated by George Russell (ART GP) who, with a time of 1'42''373 was only a hundredth ahead of Alex Albon (DAMS) for provisional pole. Taking advantage of the stops of each driver and a clear track, Maximilian Günther (Arden) manages to climb into 2e position but his effort will not be rewarded.

In the final minutes, George Russell further improved his mark and seemed untouchable. This is without counting on Lando Norris (Carlin) who, thanks to a last-minute effort, managed to dislodge his compatriot from provisional pole.

Lando Norris scores his first pole in Formula 2 with a reference time of 1'41''761 and ahead of George Russell by 0''08. Alexander Albon remains 3e before Nyck de Vries (Prema Racing). Louis Delétraz gives Charouz Racing a 5e place for their first qualifying session in the category. Sergio Sette Câmara is 6e ahead of the Japanese Nirei Fukuzumi (Arden) and Tadasuke Makino (Russian Time). Jack Aitken (ART GP) and Günther complete the top 10 of the first grid of the season.
