For the first time this season, George Russell (ART GP) takes pole position in F2 on the Paul Ricard route. He dominated the entire session before setting a 1'44''469 which crucified any hope of pole for the other drivers. Alex Albon (DAMS) must be satisfied with a second place, 0”116 behind the driver Mercedes. Lando Norris (Carlin) finishes 3e of the session just ahead of his teammate Sergio Sette Câmara returning from his injury in Monaco.

Luca Ghiotto (Campos) scores a nice 5e place ahead of Jack Aitken (ART GP) and Artem Markelov (Russian Time). The only one who could have touched the pole, Nyck de Vries (Prema) was betrayed by his engine which went into safety mode in the last sector of his fast lap and relegated the Dutchman to 8e place. Louis Delétraz (Charouz Racing) and Nicholas latifi (DAMS) complete the top 10.
