There will only be 17 car at the start of the first Cape Town E-Prix in history. After the withdrawal of the Mahindra and Abt-Cupra teams, it is Sam Bird's turn to have to give up the South African event. The Briton suffered a big accident during qualifying. After losing control of his Jaguar, he hit first the wall at turn 9 then the car of Edoardo Mortara, who had also been in an accident a few seconds earlier. Fortunately, neither driver was injured in this pileup.

Heavily damaged by the double impact, the Jaguar n°10 will ultimately not take the start of the Cape Town E-Prix. The English team explained that the intensity of the damage required a change of chassis for Sam Bird, which is not possible to do in the time given between qualifying and the race.

Concerning Edoardo Mortara, Maserati has not yet communicated whether or not he will be present at the start of the E-Prix. Looking at the images of the Italian car after the accident, it is difficult to believe that the Swiss will indeed be present…
