Al-Attiyah-Baumel unharmed after their VW Polo caught fire in Cyprus

Nasser Al-Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel wanted to leave their mark on the Rally of Cyprus 2021. The Qatari driver and his French navigator, who were chasing an eighth victory in this event counting for the Middle East Rally Championship (MERC), were in third place during this first stage, up to sixth special this Saturday September 25.

The Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 left the track and was consumed following a violent fire. Fortunately, the crew escaped unscathed.“It's not what we like to share (on social networks. Editor's note) but it's what can sometimes happen in motorsport, writes Mathieu Baumel on Instagram. Thanks to everyone who tried to help us stop the fire. It looks like the car won't be ready to start a super rally tomorrow.", he quips.

Passionate about the history of motorsport across all disciplines, I learned to read thanks to AUTOhebdo. At least that's what my parents tell everyone when they see my name inside!
