2nd Division – Champagne Wines (April 2-3)

Opening round of the French 2nd Division championship, the Champagne event offered a superb field with no less than eight WRC and four R5s. Giordano seemed to have done the hardest part by finishing the 1st stage with a 58" lead over Rebout and 1'34" over Bayard. The leader's main opponent, the Belgian Cunin, had abandoned in the last nighttime ES, also fatal to Jérôme Galpin (Skoda R5), Morin and Barbara. The next day, a 1′ penalty for heating tires on the road, followed by a puncture, called everything into question. The Lorraine went on the attack again in the final lap but lost by 2" to a pugnacious Bayard who did not expect so much, while Rebout paid dearly for a poor choice of tires. Hot dominated the situation in group N while Duchène led from start to finish F2000. B. Sailly
