Sweden, SS6: Tänak gives up, Neuville chases Evans

The strong man of the second loop from Friday to Rally of Sweden 2022 has not even started this sixth special. Ott Tänak (Hyundai), 2nd on the heels of Elfyn Evans (Toyota) stopped his stage at the site of damage to the hybrid system of his i20 Rally 1. “The red light came on on the car, and the FIA safety regulations indicate that he cannot continue stage” wrote his Hyundai Motorsport team.

The world champion WRC 2019 will, however, have the opportunity to restart under the Rally 2 rule on Saturday, subject to a time penalty. Fortunately for the South Korean brand, one Hyundai is chasing another at the forefront.

In this special stage contested in night conditions, Thierry Neuville hit hard. The Belgian climbs three places in the general classification thanks to his scratch time and is only six tenths behind leader Elfyn Evans.

In the chasing group, Esapekka Lappi remains third but must deal with the return of his Toyota Gazoo Racing teammate, Kalle Rovanperä. Indeed, Oliver Solberg (Hyundai) made an unsuccessful strategic gamble and his tires were too worn in this SS. “I no longer had any grip on the tires. » The Swede drops to 5th place, 14'' behind Elfyn Evans.
