Mikko Hirvonen (Ford Focus WRC) completes the second loop of the first day of Rally of Japan by setting a new best time, during SS8. The Finn finished in second place in the general classification, 8?5 behind the leader.

Third, Sébastien Ogier (Citroën C4 WRC) is 20??7 from the lead, ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford Focus WRC, + 22??0) and Dani Sordo (Citroën C4 WRC, + 33??7). Sebastian Loeb (Citroën C4 WRC, + 54??7) is sixth after having suffered greatly from sweeping, a phenomenon encountered by the first car(s) passing on the soft surface of the specials.

The Frenchman will have the advantage of starting in sixth position in Saturday's special stages, when Petter Solberg will have to deal with the sweep he is expected to encounter.

There remains a double pass in the Sapporo super special to be carried out this Friday but which should not – or only slightly – influence the current ranking.
