While he was seventh in the Rally from Portugal, Kris Meeke went off the road six kilometers from the finish of SS12 in Amarante, the longest special stage of the event at 37,6km. The crew is unharmed, but the C3 WRC of the Northern Irishman is done for this stage.

Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport) was 11 seconds behind while Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai) was 17 seconds behind.

Thierry Neuville finishes the first pass of the second stage now half a minute ahead of Elfyn Evans. The Welshman is threatened by Dani Sordo who returned to five seconds. Teemu Suninen still holds off his compatriot Esapekka Lappi, but the M-Sport driver only has a lead of 4s over the Toyota. Mads Ostberg remains seventh ahead of Craig Breen who takes advantage of Kris Meeke's accident to find himself in seventh position.
