Mäkinen (Toyota) “It's very strange to have this bad luck. This stupid puncture is regrettable. Jari-Matti is feeling good at the moment and he seems comfortable in the rain. The rain tires worked this morning but we will see how the weather develops this afternoon. Drivers should quickly adapt to wet tires if they choose them for the second pass. Things will definitely still happen. »
Ott Tänak (Toyota) may have lost his last title chances in the El Montmell special, the 10th special of the Rally of Spain. The Estonian lost almost 2 minutes following a puncture.
His teammate Jari-Matti Latvala was the fastest, completing the 24,4km in 12'58''4, 1''6 ahead of Esapekka Lappi's Yaris WRC. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) followed almost 5 seconds behind, gaining a little over 2 seconds from Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport).
Dani Sordo (Hyundai) followed at 8 seconds, preceding Sébastien Loeb (Citroën) by a second, the Alsatian preceding Elfyn Evans (M-Sport), Teemu Suninen (M-Sport) and Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai). Craig Breen (Citroën) lost half a minute after being slowed down by damage to his C3 WRC.
Dani Sordo is the new leader of the Rally of Spain but the national star only has a lead of 3 tenths over Jari-Matti Latvala. Elfyn Evans remains 3rd, more than 8 seconds behind the Finn, with less than 3 seconds ahead of Sébastien Loeb. The Alsatian remains under threat from his former teammate Sébastien Ogier, who is 2 seconds behind. Thierry Neuville climbs to 6th place with less than 6 seconds ahead of Esapekka Lappi. Craig Breen, on the other hand, slipped to 8th position, ahead of Ott Tänak by 3 seconds. Andreas Mikkelsen remains isolated in 10th place with more than a minute ahead of Teemu Suninen.
Tänak finished 1'43 behind Latvala. The former leader fell to 9th place, 3 seconds behind Breen. “It’s a flat tire. I'm not sure how it happened. I am very happy. »
Tänak lost almost 2 minutes in the special and is now moving at a strong pace. The puncture seems to be true.
Sordo finished 8s behind Latvala. The Hyundai driver is leading his national rally by 3 tenths ahead of Latvala who thought he had lost everything yesterday following his puncture. “I'm trying to do my race. I lost a little time at the end because I thought I had a puncture. Jari-Matti is on at the moment but we are also attacking. »
The fight for victory at the Rally of Spain is completely relaunched with Tänak's problems, an episode reminiscent of that of Wales Rally GB. The Toyota driver is definitely not successful.
Evans lost around ten seconds in Latvala and found himself 8s behind the Finn in the general classification.
Tänak had a large lead of more than half a minute! The Estonian appears to have suffered a puncture. It may be his last title hopes that are gone!
Tänak is arrested in the special!
Evans is ahead of Loeb by more than 2s in the 5th sector but he should give in to Latvala with more than 5s behind.
Loeb finished 9s behind the Latvala scratch and dropped 2s to Ogier who came within 2s of the Citroën driver. “I was stopped at the start and then tried to speed up. We are at a disadvantage compared to rain tires. I had difficulty getting into rhythm in these conditions because I hadn't ridden a special stage in the rain for 6 years. »
Loeb came back to just over a second behind Ogier in the last split. The Alsatian could retain his 5th position against his compatriot.
Loeb maintains his delay on Ogier at just under 3s in the 5th intermediate.
Latvala further improves the benchmark with 1″6 ahead of his teammate Lappi. Enough to take back Sordo and Evans? “I’m obviously satisfied. The rain tires worked well. »
Loeb is almost 8s behind Lappi in 4th intermediate and almost 3s behind Ogier who could well take over the Citroën.
Mikkelsen finished 28 seconds off the provisional scratch and saw 9th place slip away. “I crossed the tires but it’s complicated to drive with that. It wasn't an easy morning, we'll see if we can do better in the second pass. »
Mikkelsen's delay climbs to 27s, the Norwegian having only one second ahead of Breen at the last split.
Mikkelsen is the slowest with more than 23 seconds behind the benchmark in 5th intermediate.
