While in seventh place at Rally Portugal, Kris Meeke went off the road six kilometers from the finish of SS12 Amarante, the longest special stage of the event at 37,6km. The crew is unhurt, but the Northern Irishman's C3 WRC is finished for this stage.

Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) struck a major blow by signing the scratch. With a time of 24'56''8, the Belgian took more than 17 seconds from his direct opponent Elfyn Evans (M-Sport). Dani Sordo (Hyundai) followed his teammate about ten seconds behind, preceding Teemu Suninen (M-Sport) and the Citroëns of Mads Ostberg and Craig Breen.

Among the drivers who restarted in Rally 2, Jari-Matti Latvala (Toyota) was once again the most efficient since he was closest to the reference with less than seven seconds behind. Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport) was 11 seconds behind while Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai) was 17 seconds behind.

Thierry Neuville finishes the first pass of the second stage now half a minute ahead of Elfyn Evans. The Welshman is threatened by Dani Sordo who returned to five seconds. Teemu Suninen still holds off his compatriot Esapekka Lappi, but the M-Sport driver only has a lead of 4s over the Toyota. Mads Ostberg remains seventh ahead of Craig Breen who takes advantage of Kris Meeke's accident to find himself in seventh position.

Latvala is the closest to Neuville with 6″6 behind. The Toyota driver is in 44th position.

Ogier finished in 4th time, 11”1 behind the provisional scratch. The Frenchman is in 39th place.

Mikkelsen sets the 5th time, more than 17 seconds behind his teammate Neuville. The Norwegian is in 28th place.

Neuville puts everyone in agreement by taking the provisional scratch with an 8”7 lead over Lappi. The Hyundai driver will join mid-stage service with a half-minute lead overall over Evans. “The roads were slippery but I decided to push hard. Meeke lost the rear of his Citroën and slid into the ditch on a long left turn. The Northern Irishman seems to have taken the corner at too high a pace.

Meeke's crash occurred 6km from the finish. Breen should climb to 7th following his teammate's accident.
