They had done the hard part by achieving two remarkable climbs of the Turini. Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul (Hyundai) secured a first victory at the formidable Monte-Carlo Rally, this Sunday January 26.

The Belgian pair, world vice-champions in 2019, leads the championship after this opening round. The wearers of the No. 11 also won the Power Stage, tied with Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia (Toyota).

The joint record holders for victories at Monte-Carlo overtook their teammates Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin (Toyota) at the last minute. Leaders throughout the day on Saturday, the Welshman slowed down during money time.

The disappointment of this morning was the descent of Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena (Hyundai). Equipped with worn tires, the nine-time world champion crew had to settle for sixth position, behind beginner Kalle Rovanperä (Toyota).
