Jorge Martín finished second in the Drivers' standings in 2023, 51 points behind the now double world champion in MotoGP, Francesco Bagnaia. A result with which the Pramac driver would have been satisfied at the start of the campaign, but which he considers disappointing given the evolution of his duel with the Italian.

“It's not the result I would have liked, given how close the fight was, but I'm very proud of the year we had, comments the Spaniard in an interview with Europa Press. I give myself a good mark for this season, because finishing second today in MotoGP is not easy at all.

Next year, the objective will not be to finish in the top 4, but to win, He continues. At the start of 2023, we lost a lot of points and Pecco created a comfortable margin that he just had to manage. For my part, I had to attack at the end of the season. Getting 2024 off to a good start will therefore be important. »

If the duel between the two men maintained the suspense until the last race, Martín explains that he did not think he could claim the crown at the start of the season. It was only after the factory Ducati rider lost confidence following his crash at the Catalan GP that the San Sebastian de Los Reyes native saw a real opportunity to play his card.

“It was taking shape in my head, I knew there was a possibility, admits number 89. However, it was in Misano (Italy) that I told myself that I had a real chance. I saw myself as far superior to the others in terms of speed and I saw myself as a candidate for the title.

I was on the verge of becoming a legend, although I still think I left my name on this season. I am now known as someone who gives everything, who never leaves anything behind. I hope to win the MotoGP World Championship before I retire and make history” he concluded.
