Marquez suffers from another episode of diplopia

What we feared finally happened... Marc Marquez suffered from a new episode of diplopia (double vision), a consequence of his heavy fall at turn 7 during the warm-up of the Indonesian GP.

The Repsol Honda Team press release stated that “During the return trip to Spain, Marc Marquez began to feel discomfort in his vision. Upon his arrival in Barcelona on Monday, he carried out an emergency consultation at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona with his trusted ophthalmologist, Dr. Sánchez Dalmau, who after an examination confirmed a recurrence of the diplopia from which the pilot had suffered last November. »

The eight-time world champion had only just recovered from diplopia following a fall in training ahead of last year's Algarve GP. He had to miss the last two meetings on the calendar and he only made his return to the handlebars of a motorcycle in mid-January.

For the moment, nothing is specified as to the extent of this diplopia. “This morning the Spanish rider visited his medical team, led by Dr. Samuel Antuña, at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, where Marquez underwent a general check-up to assess all the bruises caused by the fall and an MRI of the brain, states the press release. The latter made it possible to confirm again that he did not suffer from any other injury. »

And Dr. Bernat Sánchez Dalmau, ophthalmologist at Hospital Clínic, declared: “The neuro-ophthalmological evaluation carried out on Monday on Marc Márquez after the head trauma that occurred at the Indonesian Grand Prix shows a new episode of diplopia caused by a recurrence of right fourth nerve palsy, with less damage than the injury in November 2021. After this examination, it was initially decided to follow conservative treatment with periodic medical tests. Next week, Marc Márquez will undergo another check-up to assess the progress of the injury and predict the estimated recovery time for a return to competition. »

On Instagram, the main person concerned, however, wants to be reassuring: “Fortunately, it (diplopia, editor's note) is less serious than the last injury I suffered at the end of last year. But now it's time to rest and wait to see how the injury progresses. »

Without getting too wet, we can already envisage that Marquez will not be back at Termas de Rio Hondo next week or in Austin the following week and that the HRC will have to, as in 2020 and early 2021, appeal to Stefan Bradl, factory test driver, to act as interim...
