Maximilian Günther is the man who makes Maserati win. After allowing the Trident brand to return to single-seater success for the first time since Juan Manuel Fangio in 1957 by winning in Jakarta last year, the German offered the Italian manufacturer a second victory in Formula E this Saturday morning in Tokyo. For the first escapade of the electric championship in the Japanese capital, the 26-year-old driver beat pole sitter Oliver Rowland (Nissan) and reigning champion Jake Dennis (Andretti).

« It's Un incredible weekend, declared the German after the finish. We were in the top three in every session and almost took pole position, but to get the win is so special – everyone did an incredible job. I felt good in the car and we have made good progress as a team in recent weeks. Since São Paulo I think we showed that we have very good pace and today we converted it into victory. There was a lot of energy management during the race, but we covered well, executed the strategy and everything we needed to do perfectly. It's incredible to win the first ever Formula E race in Tokyo and I'm proud of it. We must take advantage of this moment. »

« Today's race was incredible and the result is the culmination of months and months of hard work for us as a team, adds Cyril Blais, chief engineer of Maserati MSG Racing. We executed a very well planned strategy and we decided to be aggressive: instead of settling for the podium, we chose to push for the victory, and I am very proud of Max and the team for making a such a good job. Jehan (Daruvala, 18th, hit by Vergne at the first corner. Editor’s note) had no luck today and was eliminated at the start of the race through no fault of his own. He's on a steep learning curve, but we continue to see good progress from him, and hopefully we can aim for the top 10 with him at Misano. After five races at four very different circuits, we have shown a lot of promise and potential so far this season. With our package, we know we can be competitive almost every weekend, and that gives us all great motivation. I am convinced that we can achieve great things this year. »

Günther's victory, his fifth in the discipline, puts Maserati on the right track before the next Formula E meeting, in Misano (Italy), on April 13 and 14. On the lands of the Italian Trident…

Timely victory for the Trident before the next round in Italy! Will this be enough to convince motorsport fans to come to Misano?
