THEIndyCar is not used to riding on a wet track. The Indianapolis Grand Prix proved this Saturday, May 14, the disconcerting nature of rain for the North American single-seater championship given the unusual number of yellow flags and incidents.

Delayed by a few dozen minutes due to storms, the fifth round of the 2022 season did not reach the planned end of 89 laps due to multiple neutralizations.

The big winner of this day is Colton Herta (Andretti). The 21-year-old Californian, expected to arrive in Formula 1 on the side of McLaren from 2023, achieved a masterful strategic coup by being the first to put on soft stick tires on the third pass.

Quality 14th, Colton Herta moved up to first place thanks to this undercut, despite a lot of heat on a still slippery tarmac:

Colton Herta always kept control of his pursuers even when the rain broke in again after 50 loops. The son of Bryan Herta, who manages his strategy from the pit wall, signs his seventh victory in IndyCar, probably the best, after leading 48 laps.

Frustrated by a disappointing qualification (20th), simon pagenaud (Meyer Shank Racing) was nothing short of remarkable. The winner of the 500 Indianapolis 2019 was rarely filmed by the cameras, and for good reason: the Frenchman was never involved in collisions and made no driving mistakes on this Indiana ice rink!

his compatriot Romain Grosjean (Andretti) was on his way to the podium when Jack Harvey (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing) threw him off the circuit:

Returning to the match by remaining on slick tires while the sky was once again threatening, the former Formula 1 driver once again slipped down the hierarchy with a violent downpour at the end of the effort (19th).

A group of serious customers for the title completely missed the boat. Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing) made a mistake alone and lost a lap in the maneuver. Long Beach GP winner Josef Newgarden (Penske, retirement) was sandwiched between Alexander Red and Jack Harvey; Obviously, three abreast, it doesn't work:

In the championship, Will Power (Penske) performed an ideal operation. The Indy GP pole-sitter remained calm despite a slump mid-effort and scored the points for third position. The Australian takes the lead in the Drivers' standings thanks to the poor end of the race Scott McLaughlin (Penske, 18th in slicks) and Pato O'Ward (Arrow McLaren SP, 17th for the same reasons).
