If Ed Carpenter had taken the lead this morning, it was Will Power who finished the first day of free practice at the 103rd edition of the Indy 500 at the top of the timesheet thanks to a lap completed at 229,745 mph (more 369 km/h).
The defending champion, resident of Team Penske, is ahead of his French teammate simon pagenaud, who kicked off his month of May well by winning the Indianapolis Grand Prix last Saturday. The leading quarter, 100% Chevrolet, is completed by Ed Carpenter (Ed Carpenter Racing) and the three-time winner of the event Helio Castroneves (Team Penske).
Fifth, Colton Herta (Harding) is the best rookie and the best representative of the Honda clan. He is ahead of Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing / Honda).
As for Fernando Alonso (Mclaren racing / Chevrolet), he only set the 32nd fastest time at 224,162 mph (360 km/h). But be careful, the times must be analyzed with caution, it was only the first day of a busy week (see program here).
See you tomorrow for the second day of free practice before qualifying this weekend.
