The first qualifying session for the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) on the Nordschleife (Germany) was played over just one flying lap. The rain, returning after a brief clearing, flooded the Eifel track, causing several aquaplanings. The exit of Frédéric Vervisch (Audi, 3rd time), must have frightened the marshals behind the barriers!
Among the disappointments of the session, Mikel Azcona (Cupra, 5th in the WTCR by Oscaro championship) did not record any time due to an engine failure on his lap exiting the pits. The Navarrese will start penultimate.
Pole position for the first race of the weekend went to Esteban Guerrieri (Honda). The leader of the general classification is ahead of Norbert Michelisz (Hyundai) and Nestor Girolami (Honda).
We then witness a trio of French people from sixth to eighth place with the presence of Yvan Muller (Lynk & Co), Jean-Karl Vernay (Audi) and Yann Ehrlacher (Lynk & Co). The Volkswagens, particularly in good form Thursday morning in Free Practice, fell to the bottom of the top 10 (Rob Huff 9th, Benjamin Leuchter 10th, Johan Kristoffersson 12th).
Aurélien Panis (Cupra) set the 23rd time but did not give all his strength given the significant delay at the finish line.
WTCR Race 1 at the Nürburgring will take place exceptionally on Friday evening at 17:30 p.m.
