Authoritarian hat-trick of Cupra and EKS in Pau

The Swedish champion of the World Cup for electric touring cars opened the season, as he finished the last one, with tremendous success. The Spanish manufacturer signs a resounding victory by placing three drivers on the first three steps of the podium. Adrien Tambay and Tom Blomqvist climb on the “box” alongside Ekström for this great premiere in the streets of Pau.

Mattias Ekström could be emotional on the podium. The Swede lost his dad just a few days ago. The boss of EKS, the new operating structure for official Cupra e-racers, achieves impressive success for the opening of the 2022 season. The winning Swede and his two recruits who join him on the podium. Cupra Racing boss Xavi Serra couldn't have imagined a better start to the season. The former champion of DTM dominated the Pau weekend from start to finish. He won each of his rounds from the quarter-final to this Sunday's super final.

However, the competition was tough, the 2022 season should be competitive. Mikel Azcona, now a pilot Hyundai, gave Ekström a lot of cold sweats in the final. The young Spaniard is delighted with his start to the season even if he falls short of the podium. In any case, he took the measure of his Veloster N ETCR perfectly. Jean Karl Vernay leaves frustrated and disappointed from this first round, but there is no doubt that the Lyonnais will be in the game for the rest of the season.

It is important to highlight the great performance of the rookie drivers at Romeo Ferraris. Bruno Spengler and Maxime Martin finished 5th and 6th in this first weekend of competition. The next stage of the Electric Touring Car World Cup will take place on the Istanbul Park track from May 20 to 22.
